HYDRATION FOR YOUR HEALTH

HYDRATION FOR YOUR HEALTH: SIPPING YOUR WAY TO TOTAL WELL-BEING

BEING Methodology, My Well-Being Team Blog, hydration for your healthIn the journey towards optimal well-being, the role of water cannot be overstated. It’s the essence of life, influencing everything from our physical performance to cognitive function. Incidents like the recent bottled water scandal in France have cast a shadow over the perceived purity of bottled water and reminded us of the vulnerabilities in what we consume, prompting many of us to consider safer alternatives.  It’s more important than ever to make informed choices about our hydration sources.  At My Well-being Team, our mission is to share information with you in order for you to make the best educated choices for your well-being and we wanted to share with you a couple of tips & tricks to ensure you have access to the best water quality.

AM I HYDRATED ENOUGH?

BEING Methodology, My Well-Being Team Blog, hydration for your healthProper hydration is critical; without enough water, our bodies can’t function at their best. Dehydration can lead to a myriad of issues, ranging from mild to severe. In the short term, lack of hydration can cause symptoms like headaches, dry skin, fatigue, and concentration difficulties. Over time, chronic dehydration can have more serious consequences, including urinary tract infections, kidney stones, and even kidney failure. It affects not only physical health but cognitive performance, impacting decision-making, memory, and emotional regulation.

Understanding the signals your body sends when it needs water is key to preventing dehydration. Thirst, dry mouth, less frequent urination, and darker urine are all signs that your body needs more fluids. By prioritizing hydration, you can support your body’s needs, promoting both physical health and mental clarity.

TAP WATER VS. BOTTLED WATER

BEING Methodology, My Well-Being Team Blog, hydration for your healthTap water, in many places, is a hidden gem of hydration. Rigorously tested and regulated, it often meets high safety standards than bottled water, ensuring you’re drinking water that’s not just safe but also beneficial. Plus, it’s eco-friendly – no plastic bottles in sight, reducing your carbon footprint one glass at a time.

Both tap and bottled waters are subject to regulatory standards aimed at ensuring safety and quality. In Europe, tap water and bottled water come from similar sources in many cases, with 60% of tap water being extracted from the same sources as spring water. However, bottled water is regulated less strictly than tap water, which is monitored for quality more frequently under European regulations. This makes the quality of tap water generally comparable to, if not better than, bottled water. Moreover, bottled water can contain microplastics from the bottling process or the bottles themselves, with studies finding plastic particles in 90% of bottled water samples.

FILTRATION SYSTEMS

BEING Methodology, My Well-Being Team Blog, hydration for your healthWhen choosing to drink tap water, it’s important to consider if you should have a filtration system.  Did you know that you can ask your local water production company for a copy of the lab test of their tap water to understand what’s in it?  We strongly recommend you do this just for your own interest and to see if you need to have additional filtering.

When considering the health implications of water filtration systems, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the range of options available, each offering unique benefits and drawbacks.

1. Countertop Pitchers and Faucet Attachments:

  • Pros: Affordable, easy to use, and no installation required. They can improve taste by reducing chlorine and other chemicals.
  • Cons: Limited in the range of contaminants they can filter out. Frequent filter changes may be required.

2. Under-Sink Filters:

  • Pros: More thorough filtration than pitchers. They’re hidden away and treat water directly from the tap.
  • Cons: Can be expensive and require professional installation.

3. Reverse Osmosis Systems:

  • Pros: Highly effective at removing a wide range of contaminants, including heavy metals and viruses.
  • Cons: Expensive upfront cost, more wasteful as you need to discard water for every liter filtered.

4. Whole House Filtration Systems:

  • Pros: Filter water for the entire home, improving water quality for drinking, cooking, and bathing.
  • Cons: High initial investment and may require professional maintenance.

Choosing the right water filtration system depends on your specific needs, local water quality, and budget. Whether you’re concerned about specific contaminants, the environmental impact of bottled water, or just want to enhance the taste and safety of your tap water, there’s a filtration solution that fits.

WATER BOTTLES

Glass Bottles:
Taste-neutral and chemical-free but heavy and fragile.

Stainless Steel Bottles:
Durable and resistant to bacteria growth, but can be expensive and sometimes impart a metallic taste.

Plastic Bottles:
Lightweight and cheap, but potential chemical leaching and environmental harm are concerns. Look for BPA-free options to mitigate health risks.

When selecting a water bottle, consider materials like stainless steel or glass for purity and taste. Features like insulation for temperature control and ease of cleaning (think wide mouths or detachable parts) also enhance your hydration journey. A good bottle is not just a container but a statement of your commitment to health and the environment.

TIPS & TRICKS

BEING Methodology, My Well-Being Team Blog, hydration for your healthLet’s dive into some tips and tricks to make your hydration journey even more enjoyable and effective.

Know Your Source:
Understanding the quality of your tap water is the first step. Local water quality reports can give you a snapshot of what’s flowing from your faucet.

Taste Test:
If your tap water’s taste is less than stellar, a simple filter can transform it from blah to ahh!

Bottle It Up:
Choose glass or stainless steel bottles for on-the-go hydration – durable, reusable, and they keep your water tasting fresh.

Maintenance Matters:
Whichever filtration system you choose, keep it in tip-top shape with regular maintenance. A well-cared-for filter equals consistently clean water.

Stay Informed:
Regulations and water quality standards evolve, as do water filtration technologies. Keeping abreast of the latest developments ensures you’re always drinking the best quality water.

Infusing water with fruits, vegetables, and herbs not only elevates the taste but also boosts your nutrient intake. Try adding slices of lemon, cucumber, and mint to a pitcher of water for a refreshing twist or berries and rosemary for an aromatic blend. These natural infusions encourage more water consumption while providing vitamins and antioxidants.

These infusions not only add a burst of flavor but also provide an array of health benefits, from improved digestion to enhanced immune function.

Citrus Bliss:
Combine slices of lemon and lime with a handful of mint leaves.
Let it infuse for an hour and remove ingredients as citrus can become bitter if you leave it in the water.

Berry Blast:
Mix fresh or frozen berries with a sprig of rosemary in your water and let it sit for a few hours.
Remove all ingredients and enjoy!
